Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? (And How to Fix It)

A burnt taste is the single most common complaint we hear, and the good news is it's almost never the device itself — it's nearly always one of a handful of fixable causes.
Your coil or pod is just worn out
Coils and pods are consumables — the cotton wick inside gradually chars from normal use, usually every 1–2 weeks depending on how much you vape and how sweet your e-liquid is. If the taste has been sliding downhill gradually rather than appearing suddenly, this is almost certainly it. Swap the pod or coil and the problem disappears.
You vaped it dry
If the tank or pod ran low and you kept vaping anyway, the cotton scorches instantly — and once it's burnt, it's burnt for good, no amount of topping up fixes it afterwards. Always keep at least a quarter tank topped up, and check your e-liquid level before a session if you're not sure.
A new coil wasn't primed
Fresh coils need the cotton to soak up e-liquid before you vape them — fill the tank or pod and wait 5–10 minutes before the first puff. Vape a bone-dry new coil straight out of the packet and you'll burn it on the very first drag.
You're chain-vaping
Taking puff after puff with no gap doesn't give the cotton time to re-soak between draws, so it gradually dries out and scorches even on a coil that isn't old. Slow down and let a few seconds pass between puffs, especially on a fresh coil.
The power's set too high
On adjustable devices, a wattage higher than the coil's rated for burns the wick faster than it can resoak. Check the coil's printed resistance and stick to the manufacturer's recommended wattage range rather than pushing it up for bigger clouds.
It could be your e-liquid, not the coil
A very high-VG shortfill can struggle to wick properly through a coil built for thinner liquid, which shows up as the same burnt taste even on a fresh coil. Our VG vs PG explained guide covers why the ratio needs to match your device.
Still burnt after a fresh coil?
That's unusual and worth double-checking you're using the right coil for your device — see our Coil Care & Maintenance guide for the full rundown, or get in touch and we'll help you figure out what's going on.
